Entrevista con Antonio Ben Chimol por Angel Font

We are proud to share with you the statement of Antonio Ben Chimol about Body Esthetic and Emotional Balance of more than 100 interviews collected from catalonia characters in the book edited by Publi Corinti by Angel Font.

Antonio Ben Chimol, Barcelona 2011

Design, craft and art, prototypical icons of Italian idiosyncrasies. Bologna, cradle of the world’s oldest university, is a clear model for this innovative manner.

Antonio Ben Chimol, from the same cradle, is a professional designer and natural born creative. He develops his activity at the fashion accessories design (bracelets, necklaces, bags…). His commercial origins are stablished in Barcelona, selling Bologna-style rice balls. This culinary specialty provided him with enough savings to open his first workshop in 2004. Since then, his projection just grew limitless. Nowadays his brand is sold over 26 countries around the world.

“The environment and the old tribes, with their ethnic concept, are my muses. I don’t follow fashion trends. I receive my inspiration from the nature, its colours and its beauty , my surrounding, the chances that come across from the modern technology materials. An inspiration work in a technological world.”

His branded designs generate complicity. “My work uniforms a tribe of people who look like me, who share the expression of my likes, of my shapes; ultimately, a tribe of people who think and feel like me. The globalization effect tends to obliterate the sense of belonging to a unique group. Me, in some kind of way, with the pieces I design, regroup all those who harmonize with my way. People choose my designs and embody them into their personal aesthetics, they get an emotional satisfaction, they feel happy because they find something which shows their inside out.”

In our world of images, immediacy and consumerism, the design products usually are eye-catchers for the impulse buying. All we buy, everything we buy that is not a staple is actually consumerism. Even though, what is really important is the client’s satisfaction after the consumerism attack, having the pleasure from the design and quality joy of the acquired piece. It’s not about the purchase itself but the permanent pleasure the purchased item emanates. If a person arrives home and finds out the essence of this acquired item, rating its beauty and elegance positively, then that will be a healthy and happy shopping.

The exotism of the designed pieces from the hands and heart of Antonio Ben Chimol could fit into a dental technician’s workshop. “The search of materials it’s a constant challenge: technology at the service of innovation and innovation at the service of technology. The products I design are not just applied to fashion, they are also sold at Galleries’ gift shops, like in the New York’s MoMA. In fact, among the materials I use, only the leather belongs to fashion industry. All the materials have their own secrets and beauty, virtues and weak points, all of them abound something. Even the PVC plastic. I can get satisfaction from everyone of the material I work with.”

This sector has fierce competition, it’s not a big challenge for a creator like him; he’s just encouraged by the self satisfaction perspective. “I am true to my self; this makes me fearless and not being intoxicated by the challenges and ideas from the competition. I do really personal and original designs which has nothing in common with the rest of the designers. Thing my clients say.”

The Closet of Raquel Sánchez-Silva

Raquel Sanchez-Silva's closet by Marie Claire

Armour bracelet & Hyperspace Lizard bracelet by Antonio Ben Chimol OO

The Spanish Marie Claire Magazine shows on  “El Armario de Marie Claire” the eclectic style of the spanish TV host Raquel Sánchez-Silva, who recently became a designer. You just need to take a close look to see the charm and good vibes she has, as well as her nice vision of life. She has every must inside her closet, not a single kitsch but a good selection of wearables. Hold on! she LOVES shoes (as we do), as the magazine says those are also new and vintage, world class and almost unknown Spanish designers like Ana Locking (one of our favs), Nicolás Vaudelet, Juanjo (Ion Fiz) and Carlitos Díez who set her collection among YSL, Alexander McQueen and Prada.

The most remarkable accessories are Corachán y Delgado with a nice necklace, over a stockman mannequin and the eyecatching Armour bracelet and Hyperspace Lizard from Antonio Ben Chimol OO, which were worn at Pekín Express (TV Show) where she fell in love with our designs.

The Politician

The Politicien bracelet by Antonio Ben Chimol OO

The first double-faced bracelet.

This is the innovative concept from the designer Antonio Ben Chimol, a piece made of a high quality Italian leather stripe, with the stylized ‘Bullet’ magnetic clasp and its original look, giving as a result a sensational, elegant and irreverent piece, which can be used on both sides, so you actually have two different bracelets in one.

The designer shares with us a thought giving it the name of POLITICIAN, smartly winking to this worldwide politic and economic situation in Europe, with the first and only bracelet that looks like a politician, because it has two faces.

Berlusconi, Zapatero, Sarkozy, Merkel, Rutte, Cameron and Socrates are the names of its colour chart, made by the designer, names of the main protagonists of the international lookout. Sir Winston Churchill himself would turn over in his grave looking at this folks saying:

Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”

What made an Italian designer based in Spain decide to showcase his designs in Lebanon?
It’s quite simple, actually. A bracelet made by an Italian based in Spain – me – was sold to a Danish lady. She met a woman from Lebanon on a plane, who fell in love with the bracelet, so she bought it! That’s how my first bracelet arrived in Beirut. The ways of God are infinite…

What was the moment that made your career?

Antonio Ben Chimol OO in Timeout Beirut

I had some debts that kept on rising after I was involved in a badly-organised top-level concert that took place in 1996 on the island of Sardinia. So in order to repay these debts I started selling my bracelets at the nearby clubs. It soon proved to be much more successful than the concerts themselves!

Tell us about the use of magnetic locking clasps in your work.
I was lost between the different kinds of locking systems for accessories. Then I drew a magnetic clasp for a bracelet I was wearing. That was the day it all started. Now I’ve become fully committed to this fun, versatile mechanism.
